14th April 2010, Kumbh Mela, Hardwar

Lazarus come back from the dead is how I am feeling right now!

Words are insufficient to give you an insight to the experience. The silence and deep contentment is really what I am currently feeling inspite of the responsibilities and duties of life. Hoping it lasts!!

How did it happen for me? Divine calling is what I term it, listening and then acting. The odds of me going there were pretty slim, yet I made it not just as a participant but as part of the procession as a potential sadhu!!! Such a blessing to be walking side by side with the saints and sadhus for over 3 hours in the heat and to have over 15 million people sending you their heart felt love and spirit was beyond my wildest dream. Then to be the first privileged few to be able to go into the Ganga on the 14th April to obliterare the mortal sins and have moksha or liberation. bThe Naga babas lead the event and are preservers of the faith and tradition being completely naked and covering their bodies in ash and matted hair they are wprshippers of shiva, many performing extreme penance, burying underground for over 40 days, standing on 1 leg for over 3 months, not speaking etc

All this is to tame the body senses and bring the mind to a place of quiet. Yes they are also using drugs and some are very high. There is the good the bad and the ugly everywhere. I was only looking for the positive and thats what i drew forth.

Haridwar is one the 7 Mokshapuri’s in India and is also the entry point to the four Dhams (Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri) in Himalayas. Its name refers as the gateway to Hari.

The build up of this spiritual energy in the air and more importanty in the Ganga created the life force shakti permeating everywhere, you could not help but be moved by this fervour for enlightenment and spiritual fever.

Well it was last year that I found out about the Kumbh Mela and I was drawn like a magnet since its an occurrence every 12 years where the sun moon and jupiter planets are aligned for the maximum effect on the human consciousness for liberation. Its origin dates back to the vedic period. Many sadhus, pilgrims come to frequent this event who would otherwise not be visible to us mere mortals so its suggested. I believe that I met with just such a sadhu the Muna baba picture below, he doesnt eat or speak and is 74 years he has no ashram or desires one he is a wandering sadhu. Since our encounter I have felt his energy daily.

After visiting the Kumbh Mela of 1895, Mark Twain wrote:
“ It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys and endure the resultant miseries without repining. It is done in love, or it is done in fear; I do not know which it is. No matter what the impulse is, the act born of it is beyond imagination, marvelous to our kind of people, the cold whites''

Man has a need to wash away sins, its there in all religions, the hindhus have the ganga via the Kumbh Mela the next one is in 2014 in Allahbad and the maha Kumbh in 2022 in Hardwar again.

I have put some more photos for sharing in my blog http://www.shaktianand.blogspot.com/
